MONTHLY ACOUSTIC NIGHT - INTRODUCING CLAIRE MOONEY

Friday, January 29th, 2010

We've been thinking about having a regular live music spot at the Jockey for quite a while now, but something that will complement what we're doing at the pub and enhance the atmosphere rather than take over.

Enter the ACOUSTIC NIGHT, beginning WEDS 17 FEB AT 8PM and continuing on the 3RD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH.

For our first event, we're excited to welcome CLAIRE MOONEY.

Claire's songs have received worldwide airplay. She appeared on a number of compilation albums prior to releasing her debut, "Rocking the Boat" on Big World Records in 1989. An eclectic mix of original, punchy, political songs, the album received much critical acclaim.

Described as a 'radical chanteuse', Claire's music has been defined by her passion and her politics. She writes of protest, peace, justice, love and life.

Her strong views and skills as a social commentator, along with her ability to connect with all types of audience, allows her to diversify whilst still maintaining her political integrity. Claire is regularly booked to compere events, as well as performing in her own right, and has a regular spot on GMR's "Citizen Mcr".

Claire has established a loyal fan base who appreciate diversity. She performs at festivals, art centres, theatres, clubs, conferences and seminars.

Her performances have been described as;

"funny, ironic and touching" (Gutter Girls)

"the numero uno female singer-songwriter in town...a bucketful of talent...really knows how to work an audience" (Manchester Evening News)

"a terrific act...a powerful voice, good material and a wide-ranging set" (Tonite Magazine)

"The fabulous multi-talented Claire Mooney always goes down a storm...her strong, inspirational songs are sung from the heart and inevitably leave us all wanting more. An entertainer with great presence, humour and integrity" (Jenny Roberts, Libertas Festival Director)

"Mooney is the people's songstress" (Music Week)

"A real talent...listen and learn - 8/10" (Len Brown, NME)

"Brilliant" (Johnny Walker, BBC OB)

"Claire, stick with it. Best love" (Ray Davies, founder member, The Kinks)

"Excellent...something of an undiscovered jewel" (Terry Christian, Manchester Evening News)

"A real Manchester talent" (Channel MTV)

OSWALD ROAD JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

We're hoping 2010 is going to be a great year for the Under 11s Boys County Team at Oswald Road. The boys, sponsored by the Horse and Jockey and managed by Charlie Bell and Pete Britton, are pictured here looking resplendent in their smart H&J kits.

PICTURE POSTCARD JOCKEY AND SNOWBALLING ON THE GREEN

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

We woke up to a great sight on Tues 5 Jan - 7 inches of snow had fallen overnight and left the pub and the Green looking as cute as a button. We managed to get some photos and have posted them in the picture gallery here.

Any expectations of a quiet day were quickly dashed when hundreds of people from kids enjoying a sneaky day off school to grannies armed with rubber gloves descended on the Green - and the Jockey - for what was probably Manchester's biggest snowball fight.

WINTER SOLSTICE VERDICT

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

We've been so busy at the pub over the holiday period that we've not had chance to thank everyone who came down for the Solstice. There were literally hundreds of like-minded people and families gathered together to eat, drink and sing!

Although we struggled to meet the demand, and we could have roasted 3 hogs not just one, and although Santa ran out of presents for the kids, word on the street is that it was a great night and is certainly one we intend to turn into an annual event. It was just a great night for the local community to get together before the madness of the holiday period.

Thanks once again for making it such a success!

....We're already thinking about our Summer Solstice event. And we're thinking fire eaters, jugglers, acrobats, street theatre....
